Spirituality is my favorite topic. I can talk, write, and reflect on it endlessly. I often think about our dimension, realm, and the concept of time—none of which affects Allah (SWT). Time, which is everything to us in this life, holds no meaning for Allah. Some of us use time wisely by contemplating the hereafter, our spirits, and our souls.
I believe we are not alone. We coexist with Jinn, Shaitan (satan), and other creations of Allah, even if we only know the Jinn and Shaitan. Allah has provided us with all the knowledge we need and what our human minds can comprehend. He (SWT) has also given us a subconscious mind, helping us recall past experiences, reflect, and connect with the wisdom Allah continually grants us. The human mind is incredible, each time I learn something new, my jaw is on the floor.
How Black Magic (sihir) began
There are realms beyond our perception, although we might encounter signs from the unseen world if Allah wills it and if we choose to seek it. As Muslims, however, we are advised not to pursue interactions with the unseen, as doing so can lead us to trade our eternal life for this temporary one. Those who turn to practices like black magic, or sihr, are considered to have chosen this life over the next. In Islam, we believe that engaging in sihr can bar one from even smelling the scent of Jannah (Paradise). Besides, Black magic is prohibited (Haram) in Islam.
The Prophet Sulaiman (AS) was entrusted with knowledge of sihr and was granted authority over humans, Jinn, and other creatures by Allah. Satan, envious of Sulaiman’s power, sought to seize it. On one occasion, Sulaiman entrusted his power-bestowing ring to a woman named Al-Jaradah. Satan took advantage of this by disguising himself as Sulaiman, taking the ring, and taking control over all beings. When Sulaiman returned, Al-Jaradah dismissed him as an imposter, and he understood this as a test from Allah.
While Satan held this authority, devils took the opportunity to spread black magic and fortune-telling. They wrote misleading texts and eavesdropped on angels, mixing truth with lies to deceive people, eventually leading many to believe that Jinn knew the unseen.

What is An Evil Eye in Islamic Belief?

Islamic spirituality emphasizes the unseen forces that affect our lives, one of which is the evil eye, or “al-‘ayn” in Arabic. It´s a phenomenon believed to occur when envy or admiration from others unintentionally harms someone. Belief in the evil eye as a genuine spiritual affliction is common across many cultures. It has roots in Islamic teachings, with references found in both the Quran and hadith.
In this article, we will explore the nature of an evil eye in Islam, how it can impact a person’s spiritual and physical well-being, and how recovery and protection from it are guided by Quranic wisdom.

The evil eye concept is not unique to Islam, yet it holds significance within the faith. The evil eye happens when someone, knowingly or unknowingly, directs intense feelings—often of jealousy, envy, or admiration—toward another person, resulting in harm or misfortune. This harm may manifest in various ways, such as illness, financial loss, or relationship issues. Islamic teachings encourage believers to be cautious of excessive displays of admiration and to protect ourselves through prayer (salah) and supplication (duaa).
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) warned of the reality of the evil eye, saying,
“The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye.”
(Muslim)
This hadith highlights the seriousness of its potential impact, as even those closest to us may unintentionally cast the evil eye.
Signs of the Evil Eye and Its Impact on Well-being
Identifying the signs of evil eye can be challenging, as it affects people differently. However, common symptoms often include unexplained physical illnesses, sudden fatigue, difficulty in concentration, and loss of wealth or health. Individuals may find themselves struggling with emotions like irritability or despair without a clear reason. This condition can also lead to relationship issues, with misunderstandings and conflicts arising unexpectedly.
While these experiences can be distressing, understanding that evil eye stems from spiritual causes provides a path to seeking divine protection. Islam teaches that all trials, including those from the evil eye, serve as tests of our faith (imaan) and patience (sabr), encouraging believers to seek protection in prayer and through reciting the Quran.
Quranic Guidance on Protection from Evil Eye

The Quran offers guidance for spiritual protection, particularly through specific verses known for warding off harm. Surah Al-Falaq and An-Naas, the final two chapters of the Quran, are frequently recited for protection.
These verses seek refuge in Allah from the harm of envious individuals and the unseen forces that may affect a person’s life. Muslims believe that regular recitation of these surahs acts as a shield against spiritual harm, offering peace and security. Surah al Ikhlas is also amogst the 3 Quls which most Muslims recite for protection from the evil roaming this world.
In Surah Al-Falaq, Allah says:
“Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He has created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of those who blow on knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.’”
(Quran, 113:1-5)
This verse addresses several sources of harm, including envy, and is often recited when seeking protection from the evil eye. Similarly, Surah An-Naas calls on Allah for refuge from the “whisperer” who causes harm and distress.
Practical Steps to Recovery from Evil Eye

Islamic spirituality provides believers with practical methods to cleanse from the effects of the evil eye. We will get into how you can cleanse from these effects later. When feeling afflicted, reciting verses from the Quran, particularly the Ayat-ul-Kursi (Quran, 2:255) and the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah (Quran, 2:285-286), is highly recommended.
These verses are believed to possess strong protective qualities, shielding believers from harm and guiding them back to a state of spiritual balance.
Look at it from this perspective: When we recite the verses from the Quran, it is almost as if a dome is surrounding our souls, protecting the soul from anything which is harmful. In the hereafter, the No1 question for all humanity is our Salah, the prayer. This is why the 5 daily obligatory prayers hold the highest importance among the 5 pillars of Islam.
Self-Reliance in Seeking Protection from Evil Eye
In addition to recitations, Muslims are encouraged to perform ruqyah, a form of spiritual healing involving specific supplications and Quranic verses. Performing ruqyah can bring peace and reassurance, reinforcing one’s beliefs in Allah’s protection. If possible, seeking guidance from a knowledgeable individual, such as an imam or spiritual counselor, can also aid in the healing process.
Imams and spiritual counselors (interpreters etc.) have great wisdom for us Muslims to use for protection. Ruqyah is not the only form of a cleanse to the effects of evil eye, there are many other ways for protection. Asking for ruqyah from another individual can be considered as a lack of trust in Allah, and Him (SWT) alone. However, it can have some benefits for us, but ultimately, it is not the only source to a cleanse from the evil eye.
You can read more about the disadvantages of ruqyah in this article: Be Authentic on Social Media, or Face the Consequences of Losing Self-Esteem in Real Life
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recommended seeking Allah’s protection from the demonic realm through this duaa: “A’udhu bi kalimat Allah al-tammah min kulli shaytanin wa hammah wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah” (I seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words from every devil, harmful creature, and envious eye). This supplication serves as a barrier against the effects of envy and malintent.
Maintaining Spiritual Resilience: Preventive Measures
Protection from the evil eye isn’t limited to recovery after the harm has already happened, preventive measures are also essential. Islam emphasizes the importance of modesty and humility in sharing one’s blessings, whether related to wealth, beauty, or accomplishments. By practicing modesty, one can avoid drawing unnecessary attention or envy, which reduces vulnerability to the evil eye.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) instructed believers to express gratitude to Allah by saying “Mashallah” (What Allah has willed) or Allahumma barik (May Allah Bless You) when admiring their own or others’ blessings. This acknowledgment attributes success and beauty to Allah’s will, reducing envy and ensuring that admiration remains pure and devoid of harm.

Who is Bek Lover?
In this podcast, Bek Lover explains how he was affected by the evil eye. Bek Lover is a Muslim motivational speaker, podcast host, and survivor of multiple tragedies who uses his experiences to inspire others to overcome life’s difficulties. Born in the United States to Albanian-Kosovar parents, Bek has been profoundly shaped by his family’s struggles with political oppression under Albania’s communist regime and the Yugoslav conflicts.
He lost several family members during the Kosovo War in the late 1990s, a traumatic event that influenced his life path and fueled his message of resilience and hope. He has a bunch of great podcasts, both as a guest and solo.
How Bek Lover got affected by the evil eye
Bek Lover shared that he constantly felt extreme fatigue, depressive symptoms, and intense anxiety. He described a loss of motivation and even a complete lack of sexual drive or desire. Seeking understanding and help, he turned to mental health advocates, assuming he was experiencing depression, especially since he had recently lost someone close to him.
Bek explained that every doctor or specialist he consulted assessed him as healthy, with no identifiable medical issues. Even a gynecologist confirmed that his test results were all normal. Despite these findings, his symptoms persisted, and eventually, this gynecologist referred him to a psychiatrist.
During a funeral for a close friend’s brother, Bek confided in one of his friends about what he was going through. He speaks highly of this particular friend, calling her a genius, though he prefers to keep her identity private. According to Bek, she suggested that he might be affected by the “evil eye”.

Satan´s Mission To Lead Us Astray
Both Bek and his friend are Muslims, and she asked if he was publicly sharing his life online, as this could attract unwanted attention from others. She explained that by posting regularly, he was potentially exposing himself to people who might harbor envy or ill will, even unintentionally. The concept of the evil eye does not necessarily involve malicious intent; anyone can cast it, knowingly or unknowingly, and it often stems from envy or admiration.
The evil eye is considered a phenomenon affecting both this world and the unseen realms. In Islam, Muslims acknowledge these other realms as filled with spirits and creations of Allah, such as jinn and shaitan (Satan). Shaitan, the leader of the Jinn, was the first to embody negative qualities like envy, arrogance, and racism.
When Allah created humanity, Satan´s jealousy fueled his determination to lead humans astray. His mission, according to Islamic belief, is to cause people to sin, decrease their faith, and ultimately fall into disbelief. This is why qualities like arrogance or envy in a person are considered traits influenced by Shaitan’s whispers.
How to spiritually cleanse from the demonic realm
Bek followed his friend’s advice, and her solution was remarkably simple but powerful. She recommended a practice that involves invoking Allah’s name over a gallon of water. This includes reciting specific Quranic verses known as the “three Quls,” then blowing over the water to create what is often called “holy water”.
She instructed Bek to drink some of the water and pour the rest over his body, beginning from the head, while praying to Allah to cleanse him of any negative influences from the unseen realms. This process, she explained, does not require the intervention of others for ruqya (spiritual healing). Instead, a Muslim should rely solely on Allah, as He (SWT) is the ultimate source of help.
Step-by-Step Soul Cleanse
- Get a gallon of water or fill a bucket.
- Call upon Allah (SWT) over the water, using His names.
- Recite the three Quls over the water.
- Say your duas, asking Allah for protection from the demonic realm.
- Drink some of the water.
- Pour the rest over your body, starting from your head and letting it touch every part of your body (I recommend doing this step in the shower).

Reflections
In every nation, Allah has sent messengers to spread The message. For instance, Jesus (Isa, AS) was sent to guide the Christians in Bethlehem, in today’s occupied West Bank. According to Islam, he was never crucified but raised to the heavens. Muslims believe he resides in the second heaven and will return to earth before the Day of Judgment. Similarly, Musa (Moses, AS) was sent to guide the people of Egypt, and his nation was destroyed after Allah’s message was delivered. Islam, however, is unique in that it is considered the final revelation from Allah, sent not just to a single nation, like the previous messengers, but to all of humanity, including Jinn.
As Muslims, we are mindful of respecting good Jinni: those who worship Allah. Encounters with Jinn are part of Islamic spirituality, and stories often involve interactions with both good and bad entities. I have an experience of my own that I hope to share in a future article, InshaAllah.
The end of times, according to Islamic teachings, will be marked by terrifying events when the Day of Judgment approaches. Almost no believers will be left on earth, as Allah will allow only disbelievers and wrongdoers to experience the final moments. Those Muslims who have a firm belief in their hearts will pass away peacefully (by a light wind) before the arrival of these catastrophic events.
