Things to Consider Before Traveling as a Muslim Woman

Traveling reflects a desire for freedom, exploration, and self-discovery among Muslim women. Being a woman, you need to travel throughout the world to understand Islamic history and traditions. In this way, you can get access to new experiences and networking opportunities.

Always get inspiration for your journey whether you are traveling for education, business, visiting families, and any historical or natural places.

Traveling is the best source of self-reflection and encourages you to cultural understanding and exchange. The Prophet Muhammad SAW guided us with supplications saying:

When one of you travels, he should say, ‘O Allah, You are my Companion and Helper in my journey.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud 2602)

If we start planning our journey, we must prepare and know the unique challenges we may face. It can be related to documents, prayer schedules, finding halal food, and residential places.

Preparation is not merely about packing bags. It’s all about understanding our rights and religious obligations to have a positive travel experience.

1.   Understanding Islamic Perspectives on Travel

Muslim women travel a lot across the globe because of exploring Islamic heritage and other natural places. So, it is very important to know the Islamic perspective to have a secure journey. Islam encourages traveling as it broadens your horizon and understanding of the world. The Quran beautifully articulates this sentiment in verse 49:13:

“O humankind, indeed, We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another.”

The verse highlights the importance of diversity. We can learn it from different cultures by traveling and developing mutual respect. Historically, travel was integral to the Islamic tradition. Early Muslims journeyed across vast lands to trade, seek knowledge, and spread their faith.

2.   Traveling with a Mahram

Mahram is an unmarriageable male relative who provides protection. The concept of traveling with Mahram is significant in the discussion. Women can travel throughout the world with a Mahram as prophet Muhammad SAW said:

“It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel for one day and night except with a Mahram.”

(Sahih Muslim 2391)

Many scholars tell the necessity of having a mahram when traveling long distances due to safety concerns. This practice stems from historical contexts where dangers were prevalent. Also, Allah SWT says

“No man must be alone with a woman except in the presence of her mahram. No woman should travel except in the company of a mahram A man said: ‘O Messenger of Allah! I have been enrolled for such and such expedition, and my wife left for Haj.’

He SAW said to him, ’Go and perform Haj with your wife.”

(Riyad as-Salihin 990)

Islam encourages women to travel with Mahram or with groups while adhering to their religious obligations. Every woman must assess her circumstances when deciding whether to travel with family or with a mahram.

3.   Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity

Traveling as a Muslim woman opens the door to incredible experiences. However, we must have a deep understanding of the cultural landscapes we enter. That is the best way to have respect and connection with the communities we visit. Here are some important considerations to help you travel with confidence.

Researching Destination Cultures

Each culture has its own set of values, beliefs, and social practices. When you have planned your journey, it is important to do detailed research on it. You must know the local norms and traditions of the destination. For instance, all regions have different greeting ways. So you must learn a few basic phrases in the local language. It shows respect for their culture and often leads to warmer interactions.

Most Muslim countries strictly define gender roles. In many societies, public displays of affection are illegal. Women dress modestly and encounter different social dynamics when interacting with men. Certain countries may have specific expectations regarding dress codes. In places like Iran or Saudi Arabia, women have to cover their bodies and hair. Understanding these cultural things helps you prepare for having a good time in your destination country.

Dress Code Expectations

Modesty is an important aspect of traveling as a Muslim woman. It’s essential to pack clothing that matches your values and the cultural expectations of your destination. Allah SWT says in the Holy Quran

“O Prophet! Say to your wives, your daughters and the women of believers that, (whilst going out,) they should draw their veils as coverings over them. It is more likely that this way they may be recognized (as pious, free women), and may not be hurt (considered by mistake as roving slave girls). And Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever Merciful.”

(al-Ahzab, 33 : 59)

Here are packing tips for modest clothing:

  • Choose lightweight fabrics to layer easily for versatility. This allows you to adjust your outfit according to the climate and modesty standards.
  • Opt for clothing items that can serve multiple purposes. You can dress up in long skirts for formal occasions. It is also best for casual outings.
  • Prioritize loose-fitting garments that cover without drawing attention. This aligns with modesty and keeps you comfortable during long travel days.
  • Consider packing scarves or shawls so that you can use them as fashion statements and as coverings. You can match them with any dress to visit religious sites or relevant areas.
  • Since you may find yourself walking extensively while exploring new places, bring comfortable shoes. Comfortable footwear will make your traveling more convenient.

4.   Take Care of Your Health

Traveling is not just about exploring different places, but also best for your mental and physical health. Research health advisories for your destination in advance for vaccination if necessary. Research halal food options by using apps or simply you can also check from Google Maps.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to local Muslim communities or social media groups for recommendations. You can also prepare your meals according to your health needs which is a better option. Seek out local mosques or community centres to connect with other Muslims.

Find traveling groups on social media to get suggestions. All these steps will give you peace of mind and a healthy traveling experience.

Safety Tips for Muslim Women Travelers

Planning ahead your journey is important for your safety. Book accommodations in safe areas and research transportation options. Consider the following traveling safety tips.

1.   Aware About Surroundings

Dressing like local customs will give you respect and help you avoid unwanted attention. Always be prepared for unwanted attention or comments and try to stay in well-lit areas. Keep an eye on your belongings and trust your instincts. Try to blend in as much as possible while exploring new places. The most important thing to consider is familiarizing yourself with the local laws and customs before you arrive. This will help you know social situations more effectively.

2.   Share Location With Family

You must share every traveling detail with family especially if you are traveling to any other country. Talk about flight information, hotel addresses, and planned activities. Use location-sharing apps and share with contacts who can see your real-time location while traveling. Keep your family in the loop so they know where you are. It gives peace of mind to both you and your loved ones back home.

3.   Do Some Homework

Traveling can become difficult especially when you plan to move to a non-Muslim country. Islamophobia persists in many countries showing undeniable discrimination for Muslims. This can give you the basic challenge of finding halal food and accommodation.

So, it is recommended to do homework to find places for halal food in the area. Modest dressing and hijab are the symbols of Muslim women. So, you must know the mindset and places well before visiting them.

Safe Destinations for Solo Female Travelers

It’s better to plan places before starting the journey. You have freedom in decision-making like where to go, what to see, and how long to stay. Traveling with family gives you a sense of security and comfort. Several destinations are always welcoming for solo female travellers. Some of them are listed below:

  • Singapore is known for its safety and multicultural environment. It offers various halal dining options and prayer facilities.
  • Doha, Qatar is a city rich in culture with a reputation for safety. Many women report feeling comfortable exploring on their own.
  • Lisbon, Portugal has friendly locals and a growing number of halal options. It is both safe and inviting for solo travellers.
  • Bali, Indonesia is another popular destination among Muslim travellers. The place offers beautiful landscapes along with facilities fulfilling Muslim needs.
  • Iceland is well known as one of the safest countries globally. It provides natural scenery perfect for exploration without fear.

What to Pack for Traveling?

When it comes to packing, try to add lightweight essentials to your luggage. Pack according to the number of days of your stay. Try to be minimalist and find outfits of suitable colours and stuff perfect for most occasions.

  • Prayer Mat: A compact travel prayer mat is important for maintaining your daily prayers while on the go. Look for one that is lightweight and comes with a carrying case easy to pack.
  • Comfortable Clothing: Pack loose-fitting clothes that cover your arms and legs. Maxi dresses, long skirts, and wide-leg pants are great choices. You can mix them and match them with different tops.
  • Hijabs: Bring a variety of hijabs suitable for different occasions. Aim for at least three. One for everyday wear, one for more formal settings, and a lightweight option for hot weather. Choose fabrics that are breathable and easy to manage.
  • First Aid Kit: A small first aid kit can come in handy for minor injuries. Add items like band-aids, pain relievers, and any personal medications you may need.
  • Electronics: Don’t forget chargers for your devices. A power bank for on-the-go charging, and a universal adapter for international traveling. A small travel steamer is very helpful for maintaining clothes.
  • Documents: Keep copies of important documents such as your passport, visa, and travel insurance. Check for the visa requirements and documents. Be well aware of legal restrictions to make your journey more relaxing and memorable.

In Wrapping Up

Dear sister, as we conclude this journey of exploration and preparation, I want to leave you with inspiration. Traveling as a Muslim woman is all about self-discovery, cultural exchange, and spiritual growth. Remember, Islam encourages us to broaden our horizons and understand the world.

When you plan your destination, hold onto your faith and values. Be prepared, and confident. Know your rights, cultural sensitivities, and religious obligations. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back. Instead, let your curiosity and determination propel you forward.

You can overcome all the challenges to have a healthy and memorable traveling experience at your favourite destinations.
