Exclusion and Racism within the community | Muslim diversity

Aug. 12, 2024 / Personal Growth / Nasreen Z. Ishag

Reading Time: 7 minutes

When did Islam become exclusive to a certain group of people to practice? It has recently come to my attention that there are individuals who have WhatsApp groups, inviting only specific ethnicities to join Jummah (Friday prayer) exclusively, while leaving out everyone else.

Let us be inclusive where everyone is welcome to Allahs house. These people have no shame in their hearts, for purposefully leaving out our brothers and sister solely because of their race. They are indeed deluded, and Allah is indeed watching them. These are the same people who complain that nothing good happens to them. These are the same individuals who are racist and treat others as less because they think they are better.

Why I believe some Muslims think they are better solely because of their race

Well, it all boils down to their ego. In this article, we discuss how arrogance can trap your soul into thinking you are better than your reality. The same goes for these Muslims who constantly contribute to segregation in Muslim communities. These are Muslims of this generation who will refuse their daughters and sons to marry someone outside their race. Their hearts are filled with arrogance and egos bigger than what they can bear. They are middle-aged women and men grooming their daughters and sons to become as toxic as they are. They are toxins in our community responsible for collective disruption.

Arrogance will not lead them to Jannah, nor will it lead to tranquility in their lifetime in this world. They fear Allah less than the average Muslim. Unless you have a decent amount of self-respect, you will not fall into Satan’s traps when he lures you into sin after sin. Sins that are as severe as being racist towards your own sisters and brothers in the Deen. One way or another, these individuals and. groups are most of the time miserable deep down. There lie a set of undiscovered mental health issues that’ll lead them astray.

Allah has promised the hypocrite men, hypocrite women, and disbelievers the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide eternally.

Generosity can come from inclusion within the Ummah (our nation).

Separation and segregation in forms like these—not inviting Muslims based on their race—can lead to great misery for the person being left out. How did we reach this in our generation? Didn’t Allah tell you that racism and discrimination come from Satan? Didn’t Allah warn you that Satan will whisper in your ears and that the only way to lessen these whispers is through Him, and Him alone? Didn’t Allah promise us Jannah if we follow His commands? Aren’t you embarrassed by your actions, leaving other Muslims feeling horrible about themselves? I know we all should be more careful and remind ourselves that Allah is watching everything that we do. Please be mindful of these elements as we are the wrong doers, and Allah is Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem – the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

If you have found yourself in a situation where you got left out to worship in a Mosque, I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with you. You are awesome and they are jealous of you. To handle rejections like these, you have to remind yourself not to fall into the trap. Do not do to them as they did to you. Leave them and stop engaging. This is the easiest way to avoid your heart becoming as hard and dark as theirs.

Islam is a Religion for Everyone

You are not entitled to Islam. Islam’s revelation was for this generation of humans. Prior to Islam, there were other religions sent to their nations by Allah through the angel Jibreel (AS). Those religions prior to Islam were not meant for any of us. However, everyone in this nation is welcome to become a Muslim and practice wherever they please. The entire earth was created to worship Allah (SWT).

Anyone who has a desire to do better or has an ounce of good in them, Allah will eventually guide them to Islam. Arrogance has no place in the religion of Allah. May Allah forgive us all, for indeed we have all wronged ourselves.

Allah guides those whom He wills, so let us not be amongst those with pride large enough to cause us to lose our faith. Racism and discrimination has no place in Islam, anyone is welcome to Islam. That is why it is important for us born Muslims to always show compassion amongst the community, so that we are an exceptional example for reverts.

They Are Not Better Than You, and You Are Not Better Than Them

We are all sinners, like it or not. Every single soul that has ever lived or is yet to live is a sinner. Every soul will sin, and must sin, to be tested. The road to Jannah (paradise) is surrounded by hardships, making it hard to enter, and the road to Jahannam (hellfire) is filled with desires, making it easy to enter.

The straight path to paradise has been made difficult for a believer, but Allah is indeed the Most Forgiving, so return to Him and repent each day. Keep your tongue busy with taqwa (remembrance of Allah). Surround yourself with believing souls so that Allah may resurrect you all together. If you cannot do that, learn to live in solitude, because there are great rewards in tackling life alone. Find a balance that will benefit you not only in this life but also in the next.

How to Find a Muslim Community

There are plenty of communities worldwide that are ready to support and welcome you with open arms. They are the people you find when you most need them. Allah places them in your life in specific settings when you are most vulnerable or when your purpose is aligned. Allah places people in your life—there is no such thing as a coincidence. Everything happens for a reason, SubhanAllah.

Have hope and ask Allah to place the right companions in your path, and they will lead you to a supportive community unprovoked.

These people think in a way where they believe other ethnicities don’t match up to theirs, so that’s why they have to exclude them from their prayers at the mosques. I would help and include Allah’s worshippers no matter what race or gender, and we should all have this mindset regardless of races.

The lesson to learn from this is to just be a good human, and start changing the way you see, and the things you see will change. Don’t let Satan fool you in this process. Being a good human costs nothing!

Inclusion in our Ummah (nation) should be prioritized above anything else. Be good to your neighbors, even if they aren’t Muslims, and treat your fellow Muslim sisters and brothers with the utmost respect and inclusion. Leaving a group of individuals out of practice based on their ethnicity is haram (prohibited), and Allah will not be happy about it.

The worst-case scenario could drive an individual out of Islam and practice, thinking that they aren’t worthy of worshipping the Most High, Allah Azzawajal. Be careful with your actions and mindful of your chosen words.
