When you think about travel, what comes to mind? Maybe it’s the intoxicating scent of exotic spices wafting through a bustling market, the soft sand slipping between your toes on a sun-kissed beach, or the tranquil moments of hiking through a lush, green paradise.

For me, travel is all about excitement, discovery, and a profound connection to the world—a world that’s anything but ordinary.

Travel isn’t just about hopping on a plane to distant lands; it’s a gateway to new experiences, spiritual growth, and self-discovery.

As a Muslim girl who began exploring the globe at a young age, I’ve come to realize that immersing myself in different cultures doesn’t just broaden my horizons—it deepens my understanding of myself and my faith.

The thrill of discovering new places is as much about connecting with the world as it is about finding out who I truly am.

One of the most exciting parts of travel is the anticipation—the joy of planning, dreaming, and counting down the days until you embark on your next adventure. Research even shows that people are happier when they’re looking forward to a trip than when they’re waiting for something material.

Planning a journey—whether it’s to a new country or simply to visit family—fills my heart with excitement and hope. It’s in these moments of anticipation that I feel a deep connection with Allah’s creation, marveling at the vastness and beauty of the world.

When I Found My True Passion

There was a time when I found myself yearning for a break from the daily grind of work and endless Excel sheets. As I navigated through data and deadlines, I started asking myself some important questions: What am I truly passionate about? What skills do I have beyond analyzing numbers? How can I turn my current routine into a more adventurous and fulfilling life?

In the midst of these thoughts, I had a lightbulb moment: Why not plan a solo trip? It was an idea that both thrilled and terrified me, but I knew I needed it. So, I decided to take the plunge and plan a trip to Brussels and Paris. Of course, “solo” quickly became “semi-solo” when I convinced my brother to join me. After all, who wouldn’t want a partner in crime when navigating foreign metros and deciphering menus?

I still remember the adventure my brother and I had exploring Paris. We navigated the city on foot and by bus, all while trying to avoid becoming lost in the maze that is the Paris metro. We took a daring leap and decided to climb the Eiffel Tower—yes, the stairs, not the lift! With 674 steps from the ground to the second floor, it felt like we were training for a marathon.

As we huffed and puffed our way up, we saw young kids and even some elderly folks effortlessly breezing past us. Their energy was so inspiring that it almost made us forget how tired we were—almost.

After our climb, we rewarded ourselves with a well-deserved French croissant and coffee, which did wonders to lift our spirits and soothe our tired legs. It’s true what they say: every journey teaches you something, and if you dig deep enough, there’s always a purpose behind the challenge.

A Day in Bellagio and Como

Photo: Private

Now, let’s talk about a day that perfectly encapsulates the joy of slow travel—a leisurely ferry ride from Bellagio to Como. Picture this: two hours of serene views, gazing at stunning villas that have graced the screens of Star Wars and James Bond films, and savoring the art of relaxation. If you ever visit Lake Como, skip the hassle of parking and opt for the ferry—it’s the best way to explore the lake!

Como itself, with its charming historic town, Italian boutiques, and delightful patisseries, is ideal for a leisurely stroll. The Gothic cathedral, while not as grand as Milan’s or Florence’s, is still worth a visit. And while the funicular offers splendid views of the lake, we chose to take it easy, sipping coffee, indulging in sandwiches, and soaking in a slow-paced afternoon.

Our day wrapped up with a quick ferry ride back to Bellagio and, of course, another delicious pasta dinner. Sometimes, it’s these simple, unhurried moments that truly make a trip memorable.

Why Travel is Essential for Mental Health

Rick Steves, the travel guru, wisely said, “The virus can stop our travel plans, but it can’t stop our travel dreams.” Even when the world paused, planning future trips kept the dream alive, filling me with joy and anticipation. Travel is more than just a physical journey; it’s a mental escape, a beacon of happiness amidst daily stress.

Planning a trip allows you to mentally escape your current situation, even if just for a little while. There’s something almost therapeutic about losing yourself in Google Maps, tracing roads and beaches, imagining the adventures that await. And when it’s finally time to pack your bags, that sense of anticipation becomes pure excitement.

How Traveling Makes You More Open-Minded

Traveling isn’t just about ticking places off your bucket list; it’s about embracing different cultures and expanding your horizons. Here’s how travel has broadened my mind:

  • Recognizing Cultural Priorities: Observing different cultural values, like the Italian emphasis on patience, has reminded me of the importance of aligning my actions with Islamic teachings like mutual respect and humility.
  • Cultivating Patience: Travel has taught me patience—a virtue emphasized in Islam. Embracing the moment has helped me become more grounded in my faith.
  • Stepping Outside Comfort Zones: Travel is a perfect match for the Islamic principle of seeking knowledge. Navigating unfamiliar cities and trying new foods has expanded my understanding and helped me embrace the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on learning and exploring the world to deepen one’s faith
  • Expanding Social Circles: Meeting people from diverse backgrounds has reinforced the Islamic values of kindness and inclusivity, helping me appreciate the beauty of diversity.
  • Gaining Perspective on My Own Culture: Observing other cultures has provided fresh insights into my own, helping me balance my identity as a Muslim woman in a modern world.
  • Enhancing Mental Health: Travel has enriched my mental well-being, offering a sense of awe and gratitude that aligns with Islamic teachings and providing clarity and peace.
  • Understanding Newcomers: My own experiences navigating foreign environments have deepened my empathy for newcomers, reinforcing my commitment to kindness—a core Islamic value. This also emphasizes the need to address issues of exclusion and racism within our communities.
  • Redefining Comfort Zones: Adapting to different cultural norms has taught me flexibility and respect, helping me navigate diverse environments with grace.
  • Learning Flexibility and Resilience: Travel has taught me to adapt to changes, such as rebooking flights or canceling plans, reinforcing the importance of resilience.

How Traveling Brought Me Closer to Allah

Traveling has a funny way of making you reflect on your true self, sometimes in the most surprising ways. I used to be that girl with long, flowing hair—picture a human wind chime in a breeze.

But as I explored different cultures and encountered various assumptions about me, I began to ask myself: How did I want to be seen?

Photo: Canva

So, I made a shift. I wrapped my hair in a hijab, and it’s honestly been one of the most empowering choices I’ve ever made. Now, I wear it with a deep sense of pride. It’s like a visible sign of who I am, letting people know my identity without me having to spell it out.

It’s incredibly satisfying to walk into new places and have my faith be clear without needing to explain. This transformation has been truly inspiring; it’s like my travels helped me connect more deeply with who I am and who I want to be.

From Daydreams to Reality

During a time when travel seemed out of reach, I found myself lost in daydreams, imagining all the places I’d visit if given the chance. I would meticulously plan fantasy itineraries, plotting routes through countries I’d only ever seen on maps.

I held on to the hope that one day, I’d get to see those places in person. And wouldn’t you know it? Life eventually gave me that chance. I visited every country that had once been just a pin on my travel map.

These experiences taught me that no dream is too big if we keep faith and continue to pray. Prayers are like magic—they can turn the impossible into the possible. This lesson not only brought me closer to my religion but also reaffirmed the power of hope and perseverance.

Inspiring Other Muslim Women to Travel

Travel has been a transformative journey for me, and I believe it can be for others as well. Whether you’re traveling with family or going on a solo adventure, the experiences and lessons you gain can enrich your life in countless ways. Exploring the world with an open heart and mind allows you to grow personally and spiritually.

And let’s be honest: coming back home rejuvenated after each trip is the best part of travel. It’s like hitting the refresh button on your routine, armed with fresh stories and maybe a few new obsessions—like the perfect croissant or a newly acquired knack for languages.

Hi there! I’m a proud Pakistani-Italian woman blessed to call both Asia and Europe home. My journey has taken me from the vibrant streets of Lahore to the stylish avenues of Europe, with countless adventures along the way. Though I hold a business degree, my true passions lie in writing, traveling, savoring diverse cuisines, and keeping up with fashion. I’ve spent years indulging in new flavors, and nothing brings me more joy than preparing a traditional pasta dish for my family—a skill I honed while living in Italy. For me, it's not just about the food; it's about the stories, cultures, and connections that each meal and every journey brings. Life with my two energetic boys is a whirlwind, but their smiles make every challenge worthwhile. Between school runs and staying on top of fashion trends, I cherish the little moments and pursue big dreams. I’m dedicated to filling my passport with stamps and my heart with memories, all while striving to be the best Muslim I can be. Join me on this journey as I learn, grow, and discover the world, one adventure at a time.
