My upbringing was marked by a respect for my cultural roots and a deep-seated connection to my faith. Despite living in a predominantly non-Muslim society, my parents instilled in me the importance of maintaining my Islamic identity, encouraging me to pursue my dreams while staying true to my religious values.
The Gift of a Supportive Environment
One of the most significant advantages of my upbringing in Italy was the respect and acceptance I experienced as a Muslim immigrant. Unlike the challenges many might assume come with living in the West, I never faced racism or discrimination because of my religion or ethnicity.
Instead, the Italian community I grew up in welcomed diversity, allowing me to develop into the confident, independent woman I am today.
This environment played a crucial role in shaping my worldview. It taught me that being a Muslim woman and pursuing a career were not mutually exclusive. I could embrace my identity, adhere to my religious obligations, and still carve out a space for myself in the professional world.
The Path to Remote Work: Balancing Tradition and Modernity
As I grew older, my path diverged from the traditional expectations often placed on women in my hometown in Pakistan, where working outside the home was not the norm. However, with the rise of the internet and the boom in remote work opportunities, I found a way to pursue a career that aligned with both my professional aspirations and my desire to maintain a strong connection to my family and faith.
Remote work became my bridge between tradition and modernity. It allowed me to stay at home, fulfilling my duties as a wife and mother while also achieving financial independence. This balance was not only a personal victory but also a reflection of how modern technology can empower women, regardless of where they come from.
My parents, who initially preferred that I stay at home, saw the benefits of remote work. It allowed me to honor their wishes while still pursuing my dreams. This compromise became a key aspect of my journey, showing that with flexibility and understanding, it’s possible to respect tradition while embracing change.
Embracing My Faith: The Hijab as a Symbol of Strength
My journey towards wearing the hijab was deeply personal. As a teenager, I didn’t wear it and even viewed it as something outdated. However, as I grew in my understanding of Islam, the desire to wear the hijab came from within, without any external pressure.
This decision was empowering. The hijab became a symbol of my faith and strength, a personal choice that reflected my commitment to Islam. In my career as a remote worker, I never faced challenges because of this choice.
On the contrary, remote work provided me with the freedom to express my religious beliefs without fear of judgment or discrimination.
The Power of Upbringing in Faith
The foundation of a strong Islamic identity begins at home. Parents play a crucial role in instilling Islamic values, teachings, and practices in their children from a young age. This upbringing shapes their understanding of Islam and prepares them to navigate the complexities of the world, regardless of where they live.
As the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock. The ruler is a shepherd and is responsible for his flock, the man is a shepherd of his family and is responsible for his flock, the woman is a shepherd in her husband’s house and is responsible for her flock…” (Bukhari and Muslim). This hadith underscores the responsibility parents have in guiding their children towards the right path.
Books and Influential Figures: Sources of Inspiration
Throughout my journey, I have been inspired by the stories of other Muslim women who have navigated similar paths. Books like “Reclaim Your Heart” by Yasmin Mogahed and “The Productive Muslim” by Mohammed Faris have been instrumental in shaping my approach to balancing faith with modern life.
These books offer practical advice and spiritual guidance, helping women like me maintain a strong connection to Allah while pursuing their careers.
In addition to these books, I have looked up to influential Muslim women who have made significant strides in their fields. Women like Dalia Mogahed, a scholar and public speaker, and Ibtihaj Muhammad, an Olympic fencer, have shown that it’s possible to achieve greatness without compromising on one’s faith.
Their journeys have been a source of inspiration, reminding me that with determination and faith, anything is possible.
Staying Strong in Faith: A Personal Responsibility
As I reflect on my journey, I realize that the strength of my faith has been my anchor. Whether in an Islamic country or the Western world, my connection to Allah has remained steadfast. This strength, I believe, comes from a combination of my upbringing and my personal commitment to my faith.
It’s essential to recognize that staying strong in one’s religion is a personal responsibility. It’s not about where you live but how you live. It’s about the choices you make, the values you uphold, and the connection you nurture with Allah.
As Muslims, it’s our duty to instill these values in our children, ensuring they carry them wherever they go in the world. No external force can weaken our connection with Allah if our hearts remain firm and our faith strong.
My Journey, My Faith, My Choice
This journey has been deeply personal and unique. Everyone’s path is different, shaped by their experiences, choices, and faith. I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire other Muslim women to pursue their dreams without fear, knowing that it is possible to balance faith with modern life.
Finding Your Path: Embracing Your Unique Journey
While I have embraced remote work, every Muslim woman should choose a career path that aligns with her unique circumstances, aspirations, and Islamic values.
Whether you work remotely, in a traditional office, or as an entrepreneur, it’s crucial to set boundaries that respect your faith. For those in physical work environments, your faith is your strength, not a limitation. Many workplaces accommodate Salah, showing that religious practices can coexist with professional life.
Islamic teachings encourage trade and entrepreneurship, as seen in the example of Khadijah (RA), the wife of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Starting a business can offer the flexibility to balance professional and religious commitments. In today’s digital age, e-commerce and social media make it easier than ever to start and grow a business from anywhere in the world.
As you pursue your career, never forget the power of Dua. It’s my firm belief that, whatever you want to start, you should begin with prayer.
As a child, I didn’t fully appreciate the significance of the Istikhara prayer. Recently, I’ve come to understand its profound benefits, particularly in seeking divine guidance and gaining clarity in decision-making. I encourage all my Muslim sisters to explore Istikhara, as it aligns our choices with Allah’s will, bringing peace and direction in complex situations.
If you’re contemplating your career path or any significant decision, perform Istikhara until you receive the guidance you seek. Istikhara is a powerful tool for making both major and minor decisions. By turning to Allah for help, we trust in the best planner and ensure we’re on the right path.
“And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He will suffice him.” (Quran 65:3)
Pursue your dreams, respect your boundaries, and let your faith guide you.
To those reading this, I hope you find strength in your own journey. Whether you choose to work remotely, in a traditional office, or not at all, remember that your faith and connection to Allah are what truly matter. Stay strong, stay true to yourself, and trust that with Allah’s guidance, you can achieve anything.
If my story resonates with you, I encourage you to share your journey as well. Let’s build a community of strong, empowered Muslim women who support each other in balancing faith and modern life. Together, we can inspire change and show the world that we can be both faithful and successful.
